The teachers and coaches of my childhood made such an impact on my life that when I was deciding on a major in college, I felt drawn to education. I had watched my father work in the "corporate" world through my early life, and then observed my parents go through all of the ups and downs of owning their own small business for 15 years, so I had always felt a connection with the business side of things as well. With that, I majored in business education and taught secondary business courses for 12 years before coming to Southwood. After four years of teaching here at SHS, I accepted an opportunity to move into school administration. As a teacher, I loved the everyday connection that I was able to make with my students. I especially was encouraged when I observed students learn new material, have that "Ah ha" moment, and then guide them on how they can apply that knowledge to their own lives. I wanted to teach business courses because I felt like so much of the course content was going to be applicable to all of my student's lives; not just the ones who would pursue a business career later on. Everyone needs to know about various insurances, loans, credit cards, mortgages, supply and demand, the differences between renting/leasing and purchasing, etc., as it applies to all of us. I really felt led to immerse my students in real-world situations so that they are as prepared as they can be for life after high school. Now, as a school administrator, I am not limited to the students that I have in class or that I coach on a team. I can now help to make a positive impact on all of our students, along with working with our outstanding faculty and staff.
